Flyers Sweep Devils; Emery Out for 3 Weeks; Carter to the Olympics?

11 Feb

Flyers came back from another 2 goal deficit to beat the Devils in a thrilling overtime victory. The Flyers were a team coming into this series who were having trouble finding the back of the net and without starting goaltender Ray Emery (again). They were facing arguably one of the greatest goalies the sport has to offer and some good forward talent (Kovalchuk, Parise, Elias, Langenbrunner to name a few), and came out with 4 points from the two games in very tight Eastern Conference. Last night’s goals by Asham in the first and Carter in the second beat the star goaltender to tie it up at two going into the 3rd, where the Flyers only had one shot the whole period. In overtime, Gagne had a great shift and got 3 scoring chances, the third being the one to go in. He was with Mike Richards and they certainly got the job done by cycling the puck with Timonen down low before Gagne ripped a shot from the top of the slot.

Maybe this goal will help boost Gagne’s goal scoring since he’s been in a bit of a drought this year so far? I’d like to see him come out of that shell and help his team because I know he still has years of hockey left in him. In other news…

The Flyers website is also reporting that Emery will be out three weeks, which will be the bulk of the Olympic break. They are trying to avoid surgery by waiting, so Leighton will be the goalie till at least the Olympic break. Michael Leighton deserves it though and he needs to continue to play well (besides the few mistakes he’s had this week). Home against Montreal tomorrow and then going there for a game on Saturday. Last pairs of points to be won before the Olympic break, so hopefully they can get them. The Canadiens are currently one point ahead of us on the standings, we can’t lose ground going into a break.

Jeff Carter Olympic Nod?
Jeff Carter is apparently next in line for the Canadian Olympic team if Ryan Getzlaf’s ankle is not healed according to Without a doubt, Carter is deserving of replacing a centerman like Getzlaf. They are both big guys and I think Yzerman knows he has a good two-way player in Carter if Getzlaf should fail to be ready.
