Ilya Kovalchuk and those 11th place (not by much) Atlanta Thrashers will be at the Wach tonight. Most of the news surrounding this team lately deals with the trade talk and where Kovalchuk might go considering he’s on the last year of his contract. The Flyers are one of the teams approached by Atlanta’s management about the trade, but it is highly unlikely due to our lack of prospects and players that we would be able/willing to give up.
Anyways, Pronger and Timmonen will be getting a lot of ice time tonight as they will be one of the main factors in stopping an explosive player like Kovalchuk. I don’t want to venture and say he’s the only thing to worry about on their team… but he kind of is. He has 56 points going into tonight’s contest. Let’s hope he doesn’t add more. Emery has to be on his game, and our forwards need to back-check aggressively in hopes of nullifying the Ilya Kovalchuk show.
Face-off is at 7 PM, and the Flyers will finish this homestand on Saturday against the Islanders in a 1 PM matinee match-up. Would be great to come out of this homestand with the only loss being this past Sunday… The Flyers are sitting with close company in 6th place with 55 points in the East. They need to win this game and separate themselves from the pack. There are SEVEN other teams who have 54 or 55 points. We’re seven points behind Ottawa, and we need to keep climbing the ladder to stay away from missing the playoffs which would be wholly unacceptable by any standard.
Apparently the Flyers are having a 30% sale of all their black jerseys tonight at their Fan Gear concourse stores. The Flyers will be rocking the blacks tonight as well. Here’s Comcast-Spectacor trying to phase out the black jerseys as the 3rd alternate and get rid of as many as they can. The sexy orange jerseys are by far my favorite, and I’m glad they are the new home ones. That being said, there are many great Flyers memories the past decade in those black jerseys. The Winter Classic jerseys will be the new away jerseys next year as well. I’ll have an update this weekend with some words about this game and getting ready for the Islanders on Saturday. 2 and a half more weeks until the Olympic break.
