Flyers End Devils’ Streak at Home

17 Nov

The Devils came into the Flyers house last night looking to make history but came up short as the Flyers played to a 3-2 victory last night. After a great ceremony honoring Flyers great Dave “The Hammer” Schultz, The Flyers jumped to a 1-0 lead with Darroll Powe putting a puck past Marty Brodeur with a great pass from Giroux after a great read from Asham. Some game notes:

Line Changes
-Carter went back to an old line as he centered Briere and JVR last night and they were successful as JVR got his 5th goal of the season and looked pretty good together.
-Claude Giroux played between Asham and Powe and played pretty well as they set up the first goal when they took advantage of a bad attempted breakout pass by Brodeur.
– Another great move by Stevens as he used Pyorala on a line with Richards and Hartnell. This line was absolutely flying around the ice last ninight and had so many chances. The Devils could not simply get it out of their zone when these guys were out there and almost every shift they had was productive with scoring chances.
-The “checking line” of Betts, Carcillo, and Lappy still looked good last night as they continued their dominant play even though they didn’t score any points last night.

Dan Carcillo
Possibly the least favorite player on the team at this point for some Flyers fans due to the trade that happened for him to get here, but has he matured or what? He is a +4 with 3 points and plays very well with gritty winger LaPerriere. Betts centers the two and uses his instincts and veteran play to establish the forecheck and they are playing great hockey. His discipline has also gotten better as we saw last night when he gave a couple words to an opposing Devils player after he hit him, gave him a shove, and skated off to continue his shift. The old Dan Carcillo would have taken it to the next level and probably gotten a minor penalty and put the Flyers in a bad position. I’ve been impressed with his development since last year and I look for him to do more good things.

Ray Emery and Chris pronger
Another solid night for our top two defensive players. Mr. Emery saved 33 of 35 shots, even though that last one a bit of a garbage goal and not really his fault. Pronger logged the most ice time at 26:51 which included five and a half minutes of shorthanded time. Great work by both of these two off-season acquisitions so far this season

Oskars Bartulis and Asham’s Injury
Bartulis has been pretty solid for the Flyers and got about 13 minutes of ice time last night. I think he pretty much took Syvret’s job and will definitely challenge Tollefsen for that last spot when he comes back from his injury. Asham suffered a left oblique strain and will be replaced by Laliberte as he was called up from the Phantoms. He will join the line up tomorrow when the Flyers start a 5 game road trip starting in LA to take on the Kings.

They got a much-needed 2 points last night, hopefully they continue to play well.
