Flyers Crush the ‘Canes

31 Oct

Scott Hartnell scored with 2 assists, Braydon Coburn scored twice, Matt Carle scored on a wraparound with 2 assists, Van Riemsdyk scored with an assist, and David Laliberte who got his first shot in the NHL tonight from the Phantoms scored and got an assist in a thrashing of the Carolina Hurricanes this afternoon in front of a loony Halloween Philadelphia crowd. Filled with costumes, craziness, and “Let’s Go Phillies” fever spreading, the Flyers showed everyone that the Phillies may be defending their title; but the Flyers are still playing too as they cruised to a 6-1 win. Carolina outshot us 40-28, but it did not matter as Emery was nearly perfect making 39 saves helping the Flyers improve to 6-4-1.

Not only was there goal scoring by the Flyers, but there was over 70 penalty minutes between the two teams in the game; including great fights by Lappy, Asham, and Carcillo. Perhaps it was the excitement of the World Series and the crazy weekend going on at Pattison Ave and Broad St this weekend, but once the bodies started flying and pucks got moving, the fans and the team were having a great time and the energy-level was the best I’ve seen at home since the beginning of the season. Speaking of energy, what more can be said about Scotty Hartnell’s effort tonight as he seemed to be ALL OVER the ice whether it was setting up scoring chances, helping clog the neutral zone, or fighting for the puck. The same could be said for the whole team tonight, but other notables include Claude Giroux and Blair Betts who made a stellar return tonight in helping the Flyers shut out the Canes on the man advantage. The lines were a bit shifty again today, but it seems that Stevens is really favoring a line with both Carter and JVR on them as they skated with Laliberte for the most part and they looked pretty good.

As a team, the Flyers established the forecheck, played great defense in shutting the Canes down, got pucks in deep, and threw their bodies around. Simply put, they played Flyers hockey this afternoon. Regardless of being down two of their main players (Gagne and Briere), the Flyers got the win this afternoon, and they will have tomorrow off before hosting Tampa Bay on Monday. Until then, I’m going to hopefully enjoy the Phillies who are experiencing a rain delay and go to the Birds tomorrow before enjoying what should be Game 4 of the World Series.
