Tonight is the Flyers’ final pre-season game before opening face-off this Friday at Carolina. The roster is finally starting to take shape as Bill Meltzer has listed the starting lineups for what looks to be the same lineup that is going to be taking the ice on Friday night.
Hartnell – Carter – Briere
Gagne – Richards – Pyorala
JVR – Giroux – Asham
Carcillo – Powe – Laperriere
Pronger – Carle
Timonen – Coburn
Parent – Syvret
Blair Betts is missing from this list however it is still possible he makes the team before final changes are made tomorrow. Pyorala playing with Richards and Gagne is a great move, and JVR and Giroux are starting to play well together. The biggest surprise from camp is that Danny Syvret has passed off-season acquisition Tollefsen in the battle for the 6th defenseman spot. I think this is great news as we have a young guy in our system moving up, just like Ryan Parent has since we acquired him from Nashville a couple seasons ago. Those first 3 lines have lots of scoring talent and depth after losing two of our 25-goal scorers from last season. I personally love the look of that 4th line also. Powe, Carcillo, and Lappy will do real well getting in teams faces with the forecheck and expect to see Powe and Lappy on the PK a good amount this season as well. Notice that Boucher is still nursing his lower body injury but MRI results were negative. Backlund was called up from the Phantoms and will backup Emery during the first 2 games at least.
Also giving Paul Holmgren and Co. a harder job is the fact that Randy Jones has cleared waivers. He hasn’t said anything definitive yet, but it is most likely he will be placed on the Phantoms for the beginning of the season. This cap move, as said before, would clear room to sign Pyorala, JVR, and possibly Betts. Tomorrow the rosters will be finalized so look here for updates from that.
What do you think about the Jones situation? The line combinations thus far? Thoughts for opening night in Carolina on Friday?
