Looking Good

24 Sep

After a convincing win against the Red Wings the other night, the Flyers came out on home ice again to take on division rival the New Jersey Devils. They held a 1-0 lead for most of the game until Halischuk finally beat Emery. Then with great movement of the puck, Pyorala netted one to beat Brodeur high on his glove side. Nothing like beating the Brodeur and Co.

The song remained almost the same from the other night as younger likes like Laliberte and Maroon got to show their stuff after impressive campaigns with the Phantoms last year. Aaron Asham, Randy Jones and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen also played tonight as Jeff Carter scored first.. Carle and Pronger are really starting to look good together as they played the top pairing again tonight; capping about 28 minutes of ice time each. Pronger’s active stick and big body were a big part of tonight’s defense, especially on the power play. Still don’t think Sbisa and Lupul were worth trading? It’s not looking that way if Pronger continues to progress as our top D-man.

The unique thing about this particular game was that Ray Emery played excellent. True to his athletic form, he made some great saves in the 3rd period. This included two great post-to-post plays when I thought for sure the puck was going to find the back of the net. He finished the night 31 for 32 after his second straight full game. This Flyers team we’re seeing right now is starting to show up after a summer of big moves and hype. If they can find their stride into an opening schedule that boasts match-ups with the Hurricanes, Capitals, Penguins, and Ducks; they can catch an early wave of momentum and start their season off the right away (as opposed to last season’s start).
