First Cuts and Pre-Season Action

22 Sep

The Flyers cut 29 players yesterday. Try-out players Mark Bell and Mark Foster were both cut while 19 of the players cut were assigned to the Phantoms; including Rob Bellamy, John Matsumoto, and John Kalinski. There were 8 players who were sent back to their junior teams which includes goaltender Adam Morrison and forwards Zac Rinaldo. One of the those players sent back was defenseman Tyler Hostetter but he was signed to a 3-year entry level contract before being sent down. It is nice to see for all of us JVR hopefuls that he is still on the roster and still has a legitimate shot at making the team after he’s been turning heads since the start of camp. Full roster cuts are available here.

Tonight is finally the first home pre-season game. After coming off their strongest performance thus far, the Flyers look to settle the score from last week as they host the Red Wings. The lineup tonight is arguably their best one so far as it includes forwards Richards, Carter, Briere, Giroux, Van Riemsdyk, Powe, Carcillo, Pyorala, Kaspar, Ward, and Gagne is making his return tonight. Ray Emery will be backstopping the whole game while Chris Pronger leads his defensive unit with Coburn, Carle, Kimmo, Syvret, and Parent. This is one of the more complete lineups we’ve seen so far as the season opener is a little more than a week away.

This past Saturday night the Flyers played the Maple Leafs again and came out a lot stronger before falling on overtime. Things to take from that game include a Pronger and Richards PP goal, and two goals from Danny Briere who is catching stride after an injury-filled 2008-2009 campaign. Pronger also accumulated almost 30 minutes of ice time which is good to see from our big acquisition in the off-season. The game will be televised on the Comcast Network for all of those in the area. Look for recaps from this and other games coming later in the week.
