Okay so spending the weekend in enemy territory in Pittsburgh capped off a busy weekend filled with the debut of NFL Sunday football, there was some Flyers-related news buzzing around so here’s a quick recap of what’s gone on since our last update.
-Flyers unveiled their Winter Classic jerseys on Friday. There’s a gallery on the site here. They look pretty cool and I like them. Just wish they were more orange but that’s what happens when you’re the away team I guess… To quote Jeff: “They took the thirds (orange alternate jersey), inverted the colors, added a patch, that’s it”.
-Rookie camp got underway last week and the Flyers rookies played the Washington Capitals’ rookies in a game to end the camp. Promising Flyers prospect James Van Riemsdyk’s 4 goals and assist pushed the Flyers to a 7-3 victory on Friday afternoon. Van Riemsdyk hopes to make the Flyers roster this year after bulking up with lots of muscle as he joined other rookies such as Kevin Marshall and Rob Bellamy for physicals yesterday and on-ice practice today.
-The Flyers had their first practice of training camp at 9 AM this morning as they prepare for their preseason opener at Joe Louis Arena against the Western Conference Champions of the past 2 years, the Detroit Red Wings. Van Riemsdyk apparently was paired with Claude Giroux and Danny Briere for practice this morning, and I can only imagine if that line can gel and get it going… Way too early to tell but it’s fun to think about. Blair Betts and Mark Bell are among the veterans looking to make the team. Full report on the official site.
-What’s coming soon? We have yet to finish our “Meet the New Flyers” segment with the final big addition this off-season, the return of Brian “Boosh” Boucher. We also are in the works of a full breakdown of the off-season for both the Flyers and their divisional opponents and what to look for this upcoming season. Wednesday night is the first pre-season game and the opener at Carolina on October 2nd is a little more than 3 weeks away. I love watching the Phillies as much as the next guy, but with the Eagles decimation of the Panthers today makes me know that hockey season is that much closer.
