UPDATED: Final Rosters, JVR Makes the Team

Tim Panaccio talked to James Van Riemsdyk today after practice and confirmed with him that he is making the season-opening road trip to Carolina and New Jersey to start off the season. This is great news, and we will have more about the rest of the roster later tonight when all details will be revealed.

The article also reports that Randy Jones was off the ice and cleared out of the dressing room before any of the other players got there. This feeds the growing Jones speculation that he indeed has been sent to the Phantoms. More on that developing story as it comes.

UPDATE:
Roster is finalized.

As you see, it is pretty much the same guys from last year minus Jones. I’m very pleased that Pyorala and JVR both have made the team, and Danny Syvret has done very well. So well that he’s earned a roster spot. Who will be lining up with Parent on Friday night, Tollefsen or Syvret? That is one of the few questions that remains. It’s hard to believe that the season is upon us. I just got my home opener tickets last night. Look for an extended preview tomorrow or Friday.

LET’S GO FLYERS!

UPDATED: Jones on the Move?

HockeyBuzz.com among other sources have been circulating rumors that Randy Jones is going to be waived tomorrow. There are several sources reporting with this insider news. We’ll have more as it becomes available. It makes sense and we’ve been pondering this move with the rest of the media since the summer. With Ole-Kristian Tollefsen providing a cheaper duty on the 3rd pair and Danny Syvret shaping up nicely on the Phantoms, this is a drop to keep JVR and/or Pyorala on the team or in the system. I expect to hear more tomorrow.

UPDATE:

CSN Philly’s Tim Panaccio has reported that Randy was placed on waivers this morning. He reports that the Rangers have interest but cannot commit due to possible cap issues. Signing Blair Betts, JVR, and Pyorala would take a lot of cap room and would much easier without Jones’ overpaid $2.75 million cap hit. If he clears, Jones will be back where he started on the Phantoms. More to come.

Looking Good

After a convincing win against the Red Wings the other night, the Flyers came out on home ice again to take on division rival the New Jersey Devils. They held a 1-0 lead for most of the game until Halischuk finally beat Emery. Then with great movement of the puck, Pyorala netted one to beat Brodeur high on his glove side. Nothing like beating the Brodeur and Co.

Flyers Get their First Pre-Season Win

The Flyers pre-season campaign had been hardly stellar up until last night. Plenty of penalties taken, losses, and overall stale play at times pointed to a rough start for our Flyers. However, after a glimmer of hope in a close overtime loss to Toronto on Saturday, the Flyers came back to the Wachovia Center to have their first home pre-season game against the Red Wings. Ray Emery was going to play the whole game, the defensive unit was pretty much our starting one, and most of our starting forwards were playing. How did it turn out? The Flyers routed the Red Wings 5-2 in a fast-paced matchup.

First Cuts and Pre-Season Action

The Flyers cut 29 players yesterday. Try-out players Mark Bell and Mark Foster were both cut while 19 of the players cut were assigned to the Phantoms; including Rob Bellamy, John Matsumoto, and John Kalinski. There were 8 players who were sent back to their junior teams which includes goaltender Adam Morrison and forwards Zac Rinaldo. One of the those players sent back was defenseman Tyler Hostetter but he was signed to a 3-year entry level contract before being sent down. It is nice to see for all of us JVR hopefuls that he is still on the roster and still has a legitimate shot at making the team after he’s been turning heads since the start of camp. Full roster cuts are available here.

Meet the New Flyers: “Welcome Back Boosh”

Any Flyers fan worth his salt remembers the playoff run of 2000. Finally getting to the Eastern Conference Finals after not reaching that point since 1997 when they won and got swept by the Red Wings in the Finals. After winning a deciding series against the Sabres and coming back to win four straight after dropping the first two games to the Penguins, the Flyers had all the momentum going into the Conference Finals versus their division rival the New Jersey Devils. The Flyers would go up 3-1 in that series, and then lose the next 3 consecutive games to lose in a series they had in the bag. However, one of the big moments of that playoff run was the goaltending of rookie goalie Brian Boucher. He had many memorable saves that season, including the one in the video above. He became a Philly fan favorite during his rookie year before losing the job to Roman Cechmanek the following year. In this final installment of “Meet the New Flyers”, we welcome back a former Flyer and favorite, Brian “Boosh” Boucher.

2 Pre-Season Losses and Gagne Returning Tuesday?

Okay so it’s pre-season. Losing deciding games to Detroit 3-1 and to Toronto 4-0 last night. The good things to take from it is that it’s only pre-season, and the lone Flyers point was recorded by James Van Riemsdyk’s goal versus the Red Wings on Wednesday night. Emery was solid in the two periods he played on Wednesday; stopping 23 of 25 shots. JVR and Finnish tryout Mike Pyorala have been turning heads during camp as well as the younger guys hoping to land a spot on the Phantoms on Flyers. That being said, there isn’t much to take from these two games as hockey is a sport where line chemistry is a big deal and we haven’t played most of our veterans together so it is hard to see how they will pan out. They have tonight off before playing at Toronto tomorrow night, however the rest of the games will not be televised like last night’s was on NHL Network.

In other Flyers related news, Gagne is projecting his earliest comeback to the ice will be on Tuesday when they finally play a home pre-season game versus the Red Wings. I’m not holding my breath for this one. His injury is more of a nagging one so I’d rather him get rested and healthy so he can score 40 goals this season. Basically, hockey pre-season sucks and it’s boring.

Pre-Season Kicks Off at Joe Louis Arena

The last time a game was played at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan there was a new Stanley Cup Champion crowned. The last time the Flyers played there, we got out outshot real bad but still managed to hold a 3-2 lead until the last 2 minutes of the 3rd period when Johan Franzen and Henrik Zetterberg both scored to win in dramatic fashion last March. However, none of that matters now as the Flyers are set to lace up the skates in their first bout of pre-season action tonight to start a 2009-2010 campaign with high expectations.

Quick Hits from the Weekend

*JVR with Snoop Doggy Dogg.

Okay so spending the weekend in enemy territory in Pittsburgh capped off a busy weekend filled with the debut of NFL Sunday football, there was some Flyers-related news buzzing around so here’s a quick recap of what’s gone on since our last update.

-Flyers unveiled their Winter Classic jerseys on Friday. There’s a gallery on the site here. They look pretty cool and I like them. Just wish they were more orange but that’s what happens when you’re the away team I guess… To quote Jeff: “They took the thirds (orange alternate jersey), inverted the colors, added a patch, that’s it”.
