In a strange turn of events watching a few of our Flyers go to different teams this off-season, Marty Biron was the next unrestricted free agent to go to another team. The Islanders have signed him to a small, $1.4 million one-year deal (see: rental). Ray Emery was signed with the Flyers for a one-year $1.5 million deal, which means Marty trying to hold out and bank on a team giving him financial and team security ultimately failed; getting signed for less than the Flyers newest goaltender. Speculation circles this move by the Islanders as they already have 2 goaltenders, one being the ailing injured DiPietro. This now raises the question whether or not he’ll be healthy enough to go between the pipes come October.
Say what you will about Marty, he was always a great teammate and never complained or caused trouble when Nitty was getting starts or he wasn’t doing so hot. He bided his time and tried to play his best. I wish nothing but the best of luck to him and his family, and he will always be welcome in Philadelphia as far as I’m concerned.
